Today, I am finalizing edits for my debut book and placing the initial print order. With this being top of mind, I would like to offer you a glimpse into The Search for Purpose by sharing the first five passages.
I.
Insight
The beginning of the search is marked by insight. You sense that great things are meant to come and harbor a profound feeling that there’s something more to this life than mere existence. Deep down, you have a calling within that wants to be made known.
This calling marks the start of a journey of self-exploration and a quest for purpose in the world. Initially, you find it hard to discern your calling, but your drive to decipher it is undeniable. This leads you to desire fresh experiences, unfamiliar faces, and novel ideas. Curiosity and an open mind become your guides. You are prepared to venture into the uncharted abyss that is your true self, revealing your strengths and weaknesses, your passions and fears. Simultaneously, you begin to fathom the broader significance of your existence, recognizing how your unique gifts can make a real difference in the world. You discover that you are an integral part of something greater than yourself.
As your calling becomes more evident, a thirst for risk and adventure takes hold. A choice materializes:
Either live an empty life or uncover the purpose your life is meant to embrace.
You opt for the latter.
To realize your full potential, you must step outside your comfort zone. Fear of failure will dissipate over time as you recognize that failure is an integral part of the journey, a catalyst for learning and growth. Likewise, fear of success no longer holds you back; you acknowledge your worthiness and the valuable contribution you can offer the world.
This discovery marks the outset of an expedition – the pursuit of purpose.
II.
Time
Time is the currency of life, the one strictly finite resource. How you choose to spend your time will profoundly impact the quality of your life. Prioritize the things that breathe meaning and purpose into your days while letting go of those that drain the very essence from your soul.
On this Earth, we must grapple with the unyielding laws of physics. We are, by nature, mortals bound to the constraints of the temporal world. Instead of bemoaning this fact, choose a different path. Make time work for you rather than against you. This vital shift in perspective will transform your relationship with time.
To work with time, you must realize two crucial (but contradictory) truths.
The first truth is that every moment counts. Every choice you make shapes your very existence. Time is the metronome that sets the pace of your journey, and you must learn to march to its rhythm. Be done with excuses and procrastination. Cast aside the worn-out phrases of “I’ll start tomorrow,” “I’ll start Monday,” or even “I’ll start in the new year.” Make the most of your time now.
The second truth is that each moment we have should be fully appreciated and treasured – even if that means slowing down to reflect. Racing through life with an eagerness to prepare for a distant future deprives us of the richness of living in the here and now. Patience is a virtue as it demands our focus on the present and respect for the natural timing of things. Good things come to those who are present and open.
The past is a chapter written in ink; you can’t change it. Meanwhile, the future is a blank page that remains uncertain. What you have, what you possess, is Now. Embrace it, for Now is the cornerstone upon which your dreams are built.
Time is of the essence.
III.
Creation
We are the result of creation, as is the world around us. Experiencing the various elements of creation teaches us boundless lessons about what it means to be human.
Water shows us, as it gracefully flows with the twists and turns of the river, that we must learn to adapt to the external obstacles that inevitably come our way. Resisting the current leads to exhaustion, while embracing it brings ease and progression.
The air, light and free, holds a vital lesson. It whispers to us to rise above our shortcomings, to elevate ourselves beyond the confines of self-doubt and insecurity. Just as air fills every space it touches, we should expand our horizons and not get trapped in a bubble of our own making.
Fire, a symbol of transformation, teaches us the necessity of letting go of the old to make way for the new. It demonstrates what it means to be courageous as it blazes through the obstacles blocking its path, allowing new life to emerge from the ashes.
Earth, the nurturing mother, instructs us to provide fertile ground for the cycles of life to begin anew. Like the land, we, too, must tend to the soil of our minds, clearing weeds while fostering growth and renewal.
Observing the world around us offers insights into our own creation. Just as flowers open at their own pace, people grow and bloom with their own unique timing. On this planet, we learn the art of coexisting harmoniously with the world around us and our own selves, maintaining a balance that fosters mutual well-being and growth.
IV.
Knowledge
Truth is a compass that is always available but rarely used. That’s because the mind forms a deceptive alternative to our vast inner wisdom.
Our minds, fueled by ego’s desires, would have us believe that life revolves around the pursuit of material wealth, the chase for elusive status, and accumulating more possessions. It forms thoughts around these very desires so that they never leave our minds. Only when we strip away the deceptive illusions of the mind and confront what we know to be true can we embrace the authentic essence of our existence.
Here is the Truth: We are destined to grow old, to experience the fragility of our bodies, and ultimately, to face mortality. Everything and everyone we hold dear is bound by the same immutable and inevitable departure. The only enduring possessions we carry – from the day we are born until the day we die – are our actions. We are a product of our actions, and we must endure the consequences of our actions.
When we hold this truth close to our hearts, we recognize the incongruence between our thoughts and reality. The walls of ego crumble as discernment takes the lead.
Are you taking the right actions with your one life?
What illusions have been holding you back?
What do you know to be irrevocably true?
In this pursuit of greater understanding, the magnificence of existence is unveiled, the clarity of one’s purpose is exposed, and the authenticity of one’s actions is validated.
V.
Intuition
Your intuition is your inner lighthouse, forever illuminating the path to your true destination. It remains standing and shining, even when you veer off course, deviating from your inner wisdom to heed the clamor of fear and ego.
The faculty of intuition defies precise definition. Because we can’t conclusively pinpoint its source, we wonder if it’s a sixth sense, an emotional faculty, or a spiritual insight. All we really know is that it simply exists, a powerful force guiding us in ways that transcend explanation.
This inner beacon doesn’t grab our attention in the same way as our everyday thoughts. Instead, it whispers subtly – sometimes called the still, small voice or a gut feeling. It imparts messages about who we are, the radiant inner light that defines us, and the remarkable journey ahead. The language of intuition is unique, and like learning any new language, we can only become fluent in it through deliberate practice.
In the search for purpose, we must remain open and receptive to intuition’s wisdom. This skill is fortified through mindful reflection (i.e., meditation and prayer) and exercised via surrendering to our inner Knowing. As we clear away the noise of external influences and the cacophony of our thoughts, we create space for intuition’s delicate guidance to emerge.
With its unwavering glow, our inner lighthouse is the source of authentic navigation in our lives. It doesn’t seek to impose or dictate but rather gently encourages us to align with our true selves, utilize our gifts, and follow the path of our unique purpose.
